The Corporate coup d'état:
Wow, the Supreme Court ruling on the case of CITIZENS UNITED v. FEDERAL ELECTION COMMISSION as of 01/21/2010 (document found here) has secured our future as a potential Fascist or Inverted Totalitarian State... a United Corporate States of America if you will. This has to be the worst ruling by the Supreme Court in my lifetime. Here is a quote from the ruling (Majority Opinion):
"...this Court now concludes that independent expenditures, including those made by corporations, do not give rise to corruption or the appearance of corruption. That speakers may have influence over or access to elected officials does not mean that those officials are corrupt. And the appearance of influence or access will not cause the electorate to lose faith in this democracy."
Here is the only sane voice from that ruling... a quote from Justice Stevens, in dissent, who states the obvious (Dissenting Opinion):
"...It might also be added that corporations have no consciences, no beliefs, no feelings, no thoughts, no desires. Corporations help structure and facilitate the activities of human beings, to be sure, and their “personhood” often serves as a useful legal fiction. But they are not themselves members of “We the People” by whom and for whom our Constitution was established. "
Americans brace yourselves for a very dangerous future, unless we can convince our Congress to enact new laws or better yet, a constitutional amendment to prevent Corporations from having total control and influence over our future elections by being allowed to spend unlimited amounts of money during campaigns to sway the electorate. We need to end the illegitimate legal doctrines that prevent the American people from governing ourselves. Here is a great website that explains this in more detail, MOVE to AMEND: http://movetoamend.org/
What did the Supreme Court just do to our democracy?

A History of Corporations in America helps one to understand how corporations
have evolved since the founding of our nation:
See this page at ReclaimDemocracy.org:
http://bit.ly/7NjzWS. Quoting from this
website on "Corporate
Personhood"
"Our Bill of Rights was the result of tremendous efforts to institutionalize and protect the rights of human beings. It strengthened the premise of our Constitution: that the people are the root of all power and authority for government. This vision has made our Constitution and government a model emulated in many nations.
But corporate lawyers (acting as both attorneys and judges) subverted our Bill of Rights in the late 1800's by establishing the doctrine of "corporate personhood" -- the claim that corporations were intended to fully enjoy the legal status and protections created for human beings.
We believe that corporations are not persons and possess only the privileges we willfully grant them. Granting corporations the status of legal "persons" effectively rewrites the Constitution to serve corporate interests as though they were human interests. Ultimately, the doctrine of granting constitutional rights to corporations gives a thing illegitimate privilege and power that undermines our freedom and authority as citizens. While corporations are setting the agenda on issues in our Congress and courts, We the People are not; for we can never speak as loudly with our own voices as corporations can with the unlimited amplification of money."
There’s a big difference between a human and a corporation. For instance, those that control a corporation can hide behind the so called “Corporate Veil”:
“The law treats a corporation as a legal "person" that has standing to sue and be sued, distinct from its stockholders. The legal independence of a corporation prevents shareholders from being personally liable for corporate debts. The legal "person" status of corporations gives the business perpetual life; deaths of officials or stockholders do not alter the corporation's structure.”
How many humans do you know that have “perpetual life”? You can see that the whole structure of “insulating” the individual from “responsibility” creates the environment where totally IRRESPONSIBLE behavior by Corporations can become tempting.
This ruling is completely unfair when you think about it. It’s like giving the ultra-rich a double voice in our government. They (the ultra-rich) can influence politics once on a personal level with a limited contribution amount of $2,400/yr/election, and twice via a corporate level, where they now can spend an unlimited amount of funds on political campaigns to influence the electorate.
Furthermore, what about Corporations that are majority "FOREIGN" owned? I guess the foreign owned corporations can just manipulate the American conscience via the tube, and the Supreme Court sees no problem with this? According to the Federal Election Committee and Federal Campaign Finance Law, individual contributions are limited to $2,400 per candidate, per election (be it a primary, runoff, or general election), yet, Corporations, Labor Organizations, Federal Government Contractors and "Foreign Nationals" were prohibited from contributing. Of course we know that corporations influence politics via PACs and lobbyists, but to allow unlimited spending by corporations on political "marketing" will ultimately end up corrupting democracy.
The founding fathers of this country would once again be “rolling in their graves” over this
ruling. This has nothing to do with the small corporations / legal entities, as
they have no significant amount of money to influence politics. We’re talking
about the big, multi-national, corporations here. Clue yourself in on the
history of
corporations in
This was a nation OF, BY & FOR the people at its founding; however, over the last 100+ years that has been whittled slowly away, and the Supreme Court ruling on 01/21/2010 effectively destroyed it… Now we are subjects in a nation OF, BY & FOR The Corporations. Personally I don’t want corporations influencing politics in this nation. One American = One Vote = One Voice of Influence = One Campaign Contribution.
Say NO to the ruling, and let your Congress and Senate know how you feel about this corporate raid of our nation! Unlimited corporate political influence wasn’t the idea or concept when this nation was founded. Besides, this ruling could be the spark that one day leads this nation into another civil war… For those that argue that this is a great win for the so called "freedom of speech" advocates, may I remind you that we already have, as individual citizens of this nation, a voice of freedom. There is no need to give an additional "second voice" with unlimited funding to the entities known as Corporations! America wake up! You 20 & 30 year olds out there that literally worship Corporations need a wakeup call.
Since we now treat corporations with the same rights as an individual, let's analyze the psychology of some corporations:
Diagnosis of Personality Disorder: PSYCHOPATH
A few that come to mind are Union Carbide, Philip Morris, Dow Chemical, Goldman Sachs, General Electric, Lehman Brothers, Country Wide Financial, General Dynamics, Northrop Grumman, Bechtel, Valero Energy Corp, Halliburton, Blackwater (aka - Xe Services LLC, nothing like having a bunch of mercenaries doing the henchmen work for Rome as she sinks into the abyss of financial debt), Freddie Mac, Fannie Mae, Bear Stearns, DuPont, Lockheed Martin, Enron, Nike, Exxon, and Monsanto just to name but a few of the ones that have committed various acts of fraud, abuse, deceit, exploitation of humans & the planet and/or other criminal acts.
A must see movie by everyone in America is "The Corporation"
